People Who Got Rich During the Depression
The Great Depression was a hard time for most but there was a few who used this time to get rich. Babe Ruth, Charles Darrow and John Dillinger were 3 people who made the big bucks during the biggest economic downfall our country had seen. They all used very different, yet effective, ways to make money in the 30s.
George Ruth was only 19 years old when his first contract came in. He knew the game of baseball unlike anybody during the 30s. He was an American icon and gave millions of people hope during the Great Depression. His baseball career was his main income. He had a yearly salary of $80,000 which was $5,000 more than President Hoover. His amazing baseball skills gave him the nickname Babe Ruth and caused him to be wealthy during the Great Depression.
Charles Darrow also used a game to get rich, but his involved a board. With the Crash of '29, Darrow found himself out of work as a heater salesman. With no way to get money, he started learning "The Landlords Game". He took an interest and decided to perfect the game which is now called "Monopoly". He secured a copyright on the game and started selling copies to department stores in Philadelphia. Parker Brothers got the patent and started publishing and selling the game. 20,000 copies of the game sold each week which caused Charles Darrow to be the first millionaire game designer.
John Dillinger used methods not many people would endorse to become rich during the Great Depression. Going in and out of prison or jail all his life, he escaped and headed to Chicago and start one of the most organized and deadly bank robbing gangs in the country. They stole from police to get supplies to rob banks. They had robbed banks all over using excuses to get in the banks that most people thought were hilarious. They lived in fancy apartments and had the best things. They dressed like casual businessmen and even had girlfriends or wives. He was just the type of anti-hero that the unemployed masses loved. He quit robbing after a bank heist went wrong and met his girlfriend who sold him out to the FBI. On a date, he was shot and killed. Dillinger had stole over $3 million in today's dollars.
